Overview

Before the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992, lots of work was done on the beaches and the nearby marina. Since then, this area is very attractive for the tourists from all over the world. Today, many workers clean this area everyday – not only the beach, but even the coastal part of the sea. The most popular beaches in Barcelona are: Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Saint Sebastian and Barceloneta.

Icaria Beach is situated on the Mediterranean Sea, next to Barceloneta. This beach is often visited by families with children, and it is not as crowded as the other Barcelona beaches. Here, it is easy for the parents to take care of their children while lying on the beach or sitting in the nearby bar. Icaria is situated at several minutes walk from the city’s center. It is also next to the Olympic village, today a popular tourist attraction with all kinds of shops, restaurants and bars. This beach is not far from the other tourist attractions in Barcelona, so for the tourists it is easy to go to the beach and take a break after exploring the wealthy history of the city. To reach the beach, visitors can take buses. They can also use tram- line T4, or metro- line 4.

Beach activities

Due to the frequent visits of the tourists on everyday basis, it is essential for the sand and water to be clean. Icaria is one of the cleanest beaches in the area. Workers on the beach take health standard tests everyday and maintain the beach. As a result of it, the sand is shiny and the water is Marine blue. Icaria Beach provides its tourists with many water sports and leisure activities. Along the beach, there is a big promenade. People use it for jogging and walking or for skating and roller driving. Along the promenade there are many bars and restaurants with domestic, Italian and Chinese cuisine. On the Icaria Beach, all kind of sports are popular: volleyball and mini football on the sand, ping-pong, water skiing, surfing…

Special facilities

This 400 m long, quiet beach, apart from being popular among the families with children, is also popular among the people with special needs. A small part of the beach is reserved for the physically disabled persons. It provides its visitors with specialized service to help this people to go in or out of the water or to take care of them while they are in the water. On this beach there are chairs specially reserved for people who cannot swim, lift in order to get people out of their wheelchairs and special changing rooms. Visitors can use this service mostly during June, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 – 7 p.m.
